In a bold move to revitalize the riverfront of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, architecture studio Entorno y Contexto has transformed a four-kilometer stretch of the Papaloapan River with striking red-painted steel structures. The project, commissioned by Mexico’s Secretaria of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU), aims to create a vibrant public space that seamlessly integrates with the natural environment.
Entorno y Contexto’s director, Alejandro Polo Lamadrid, shared insights into the vision behind the project. He emphasized the importance of spatial articulation to ensure the coherence and accessibility of the public environment. By incorporating recreational, cultural, and sports facilities, the team sought to enhance the area’s environmental and landscape value.
The design of the park reflects a nod to the region’s industrial heritage, with the use of simple materials like steel and concrete. The open-air structures, elevated on steel stilts, provide a unique vantage point for park visitors, offering amenities such as restrooms and gathering spaces for the community.
A key feature of the development is the inclusion of sports courts and exercise areas, catering to a diverse range of recreational activities. The integration of walking and cycling paths throughout the park connects these spaces and promotes an active lifestyle for visitors of all ages.
To ensure the sustainability of the park, Entorno y Contexto collaborated with landscape studio Virens A+P to rehabilitate the landscape. By removing non-endemic vegetation and replanting with native trees, the team aimed to reduce erosion and preserve the natural beauty of the area.
The revitalized park has quickly become a hub for the community, attracting visitors of all ages who appreciate the well-designed spaces for both sports and relaxation. With an estimated capacity to accommodate up to 10,000 users at a time, the park is poised to become a beloved public asset in Tuxtepec.
