Local design firm Studio Vapore has brought a touch of magic to the Western Academy of Beijing’s elementary school library in China, creating a space that seamlessly blends elements from beloved children’s stories with traditional Chinese architectural influences.

In an effort to foster a sense of wonder and curiosity among young readers, Studio Vapore drew inspiration from timeless children’s literature from around the world. The vision behind the project was not just to create a functional library but to transform it into a place that ignites imagination and sparks exploration.

Erica Borsa, the founder of Studio Vapore, shared her insights with Dezeen, stating, “From the beginning, we aimed to balance the functional needs of a library with the more aspirational goal of making it a place that nurtures imagination. A truly inspiring library had to be more than a functional space—it needed to spark curiosity and wonder.”

To bring their vision to life, the design team crafted an adventure story that served as the foundation for the entire project, turning the space into a three-dimensional storybook where every element contributes to a captivating journey of discovery.

Drawing on the rich architectural heritage of China, the design incorporated traditional roof forms and reimagined historical color palettes to create a visually stunning environment. Shades of salmon pink, deep red, dusty blue, and muted gold were carefully chosen to evoke the hues of ancient temples and elements reminiscent of the ‘faded’ Forbidden City.

The library unfolds through a series of themed areas inspired by classic children’s stories, such as labyrinths, caves, and forests. Borsa explained, “As we explored children’s literature, we noticed that certain spatial elements often appear. Building on the library’s technical foundation, we sought to make it an immersive environment, weaving in these familiar storytelling elements to shape the design.”

One of the standout features of the library is a Tibetan-inspired storytelling tower that serves as a visual centerpiece and conceptual landmark. Rising from an elevated reading platform, the tower leads to a suspended net for informal gatherings, adding a whimsical touch to the space.

The design also includes a ‘labyrinth’ of modular, circular bookshelves that create semi-private zones for independent reading and small group discussions. A temple hut with a cone-shaped roof offers an enclosed space for reading, providing a cozy and intimate setting for young readers to immerse themselves in their favorite books.

To balance quiet study areas with interactive social spaces, Studio Vapore collaborated with Delhom Acoustics to integrate acoustic design components. Ceiling panels and recycled felt panels were strategically placed to reduce noise levels, ensuring that the library caters to both focused study and collaborative activities.

Throughout the space, interactive features like whispering tubes, periscopes, and hidden crystals add an element of play and encourage discovery among young visitors. Borsa shared, “The hidden crystals near the windows cast small rainbows on the floor when the light hits them just right. We loved the idea that a child might notice one by chance, wonder where it came from, and start looking for the source—turning a simple walk through the library into a little discovery.”

Studio Vapore’s innovative approach to blending storytelling, architecture, and design has transformed the elementary school library into a captivating and immersive environment that inspires young minds to embark on their own literary adventures. With its vibrant colors, whimsical elements, and thoughtful design features, the library is not just a space for reading—it’s a place where imagination knows no bounds.
