London’s Barbican Centre is set to undergo a mesmerizing transformation as it converts one of its underground car parks into a vibrant rave space for an innovative exhibition titled “Feel the Sound.” This groundbreaking “multi-sensory” show aims to delve into the intricate connection between sound, movement, and the human body, promising an unparalleled auditory and visual experience for all attendees. Scheduled to run from May 22 to August 31, “Feel the Sound” will encompass various areas of the Barbican’s concrete jungle, featuring 11 unique commissions and installations that are sure to captivate and intrigue visitors of all ages.
Immersive Sensory Experience
The Barbican has unveiled a statement expressing the essence of the exhibition, urging guests to “awaken your senses, embrace our sonic world, and discover personal frequencies” through a series of interactive and thought-provoking installations. This sensory journey promises to redefine the way we perceive sound, rhythms, and vibrations in our everyday lives, shedding light on the profound impact they have on our perception of the world around us. From the ambient soundtrack of our surroundings to the rhythmic beat of our hearts, “Feel the Sound” invites us to explore the hidden frequencies that shape our reality and challenge our senses in unexpected ways.
Barbican Immersive, a pioneering division of the center dedicated to pushing the boundaries of technology and digital creativity in the realm of immersive art, has joined forces with Tokyo’s MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives to bring this ambitious project to life. Collaborating with Dublin-based Temporary Pleasure, an ephemeral architecture studio renowned for its innovative approach to designing temporary spaces and experiences in nightlife, music, arts, and culture, the team is set to transform the Barbican’s Car Park 5 into a dynamic hub of creativity and expression.
Unveiling Unique Installations
The highlight of the exhibition, known as “Joyride,” promises to merge the vibrant energy of “boy racer” subculture with the raw intensity of “DIY raves,” offering a nostalgic and exhilarating experience for visitors. This fusion of music, art, and cultural influences is set to redefine the traditional concept of a gallery space, inviting guests to immerse themselves in a world of pulsating beats and electrifying visuals. Additionally, Car Park 5 will host an intriguing installation titled “Forever Frequencies” by the innovative research and design studio Domestic Data Streamers, known for their unconventional approach to transforming data into art. Described as a collaboration of 30 life forms dedicated to turning Excel spreadsheets into poetic lyrics, this installation promises to challenge conventional notions of creativity and expression.
“Feel the Sound” will feature a diverse lineup of artists and collaborators, including Evan Ifekoya, Miyu Hosoi, Boiler Room, MUTEK, and Elsewhere in India’s Murthovic and Thiruda, each bringing their unique perspective and creative vision to the exhibition. Of particular note is the collaboration between Trans Voices, the world’s first professional trans+ vocal collective, ILĀ, and spatial sound art studio MONOM, for a groundbreaking project titled “UN/BOUND.” This holographic choral exploration invites visitors to contribute their voices to an ever-evolving chorus, highlighting the power of collective expression and unity in the face of adversity.
As “Feel the Sound” prepares to launch in London this spring, the exhibition is poised to embark on an international journey, with plans to visit MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives in 2026.
