Renowned Architect Liu Jiakun Recognized for Human-Centered Design
Liu Jiakun, a Chengdu-based architect with a deep-rooted connection to his native Sichuan province, has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize. This award, considered the highest accolade in the field of architecture, celebrates Liu’s innovative and sensitive approach to design that focuses on the human experience within built environments. He follows in the footsteps of Wang Shu, becoming only the second Chinese citizen to receive this esteemed recognition.
A Unique Approach to Design
The Pritzker jury commended Liu for his ability to integrate Chinese tradition into his work, not through nostalgia, but as a catalyst for creative exploration. By leveraging the rich history and materials of Sichuan province, Liu crafts spaces that serve as more than just physical structures. West Village: A Testament to Liu’s Vision
Among Liu Jiakun’s portfolio of works, West Village in Chengdu stands out as a shining example of his design philosophy. This five-story mixed-use complex redefines the concept of a city block by creating a vertical urban environment. Interconnected walkways, ramps, and open-air plazas seamlessly link a variety of amenities, including shops, restaurants, and recreational facilities. The dynamic, multi-level public space encourages social interaction and community engagement, reflecting Liu’s commitment to creating environments that foster human connection.
However, success does not come without its challenges. Following an overwhelming response from the public that attracted 9,000 visitors to the rooftop promenade in a single day, local authorities temporarily closed off access to the structure. Despite this setback, West Village has since reopened its doors, continuing to serve as a vibrant hub for the community.

Liu Jiakun’s architectural endeavors extend beyond mere aesthetics, delving into the realms of social responsibility and environmental sustainability. In the aftermath of the tragic 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Liu pioneered the use of “rebirth bricks,” a novel approach that repurposed rubble mixed with wheat fiber to rebuild devastated areas.
